JAMB has urged candidates for the 2019 UTME to adhere strictly to the printing guidelines with regards to their examination slips. This is contained in the board’s weekly bulletin tagged ‘JAMBULLETIN’, by the Head, Media and Information, Dr Fabian Benjamin, and issued in Lagos on Sunday. According to the bulletin, printing of the 2019 Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME) notification slip is on-going, as the board has since made it ready for all candidates who registered for the examination. “The notification is to allow candidates know their examination schedules, which includes time, date and venue of the examination. "Candidates are therefore advised to take the printing order seriously in order for them to have an idea of the location of their centres, well ahead of the examination. A Nigerian student was killed and a woman, 39, sustained light injuries in an accident at Jalan Semarak near Taman Semarah in Malaysia yesterday. David Oyaele Audu, a student of the President College in Kuala Lumpur, was coming from a nightclub in Taman Semarak to Nilai town when his car veered off the road and hit the road divider before it was thrown to the opposite lane and crashed into another car driven by a woman. The woman sustained light injuries while Audu died on the spot due to severe head injuries. The accident happened at about 8.15am on Monday morning.

A religious group, the Muslim Rights Concern, MURIC, on Monday described the 2018 examinations timetable recently released by the West African Examinations Council, WAEC, as volatile, warning that the timetable is capable of causing a disturbance of public peace if it erodes the Jumat period. WAEC recently scheduled Chemistry for 2 pm to 4 pm on Friday April 20, 2018. But following criticisms from MURIC, the subject was moved backwards to Tuesday April 10, 2018. However, ceramics (Essay) and Forestry (Essay) will now be held on Friday April 20, 2018 from 2 pm to 4 pm. The Joint Admission and Matriculation Examination Board (JAMB) has hinted that it has plans have UTME candidates take the exam from their homes in future. This was disclosed by JAMB's Head of Media, Dr. Fabian Benjamin, during a radio programme, "Day break show" in Abeokuta. He said that the board is thinking of an open book examination where by candidates can take the exam from the comfirt of their homes. Adding that the board will do this once they have the technology. Commenting on this,aAn ICT expert, Damilola Oyeshola, said the challenge of IT infrastructure in the country would make the idea of candidates taking the exam from their bhoimes difficult to implement. n the issue of results, Dr fabian mentioned that once a candidates clicks "Submit" after the exam, the result for that candidate is ready. However, JAMB will have to delay the release so that the results will be previewed before releasing to avoid cancellation of results later. 

The federal government says it will source for N8 billion within five weeks to pay the Joint Action Committee (JAC) of the Non-Academic Staff Union of Nigerian Universities. The Minister of Labour and Employment, Chris Ngige, said this at a resolution reached at a conciliation meeting with the Non-Academic Staff Union of Nigerian Universities in Abuja. The Non-Academic staff Union of Nigerian are made of the Non Academic Staff Union of Nigerian Universities (NASU), Senior Staff Academic of Nigerian Universities (SSANU) National Association of Academic Technologists, (NAAT). The resolution was jointly signed by Mr. Ngige, NAAT President, Sani Suleiman, NASU General Secretary, Peters Adeyemi, SSANU President Samson Ugwoke and Anthony Anwukah, Minister of State for Education. The Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) Registrar, Professor Ishaq Oloyede was a guest on Ray Power fm’s political and current affairs programme, ‘Political Platform’ where he answered and discussed a wide range of questions. Speaking on the tendency of candidates to cheat despite reforms he has championed to curtail such, he explained : “Even when JAMB sets-up rogue centres (to catch cheats), you find that it is these same poor people that you are fighting for, that pay N200,000 and we disqualify such students.” The professor lamented the way parents facilitate cheating especially “mothers in particular (that are) determined to make graduates of their children at all cost”. The ongoing strike by members of the Non-academic Staff Union of Universities took another turn yesterday, as some members of the University of Uyo chapter took agitations to another level. According to Inside Uniuyo, the NASU members reportedly struck the Generator Houses and Diesel Dump. It is reported that visibly angry members, emptied the diesel into the gutters while some were poured into the ravine, with a view to disrupt activities. This is coming on the heels of the commencement of the University’s 1st semester examinations yesterday February 19th, 2018, even while the Union was on strike. The national leadership of NASU had embarked on a nationwide strike in November, 2017 over non-payment of earned allowances.

The current trending update as more than 100 Nigerian students on scholarship in the United Kingdom universities could be deported home as early as this week except their fees are settled immediately, according to The Telegraph of London. Fresh update reveals that the students are said to be sponsored by a regional agency and some of them are saddled with debts of up to £20,000. The name of the sponsor agency was not given in the report. The report described the students as “some of the Nigeria’s brightest undergraduates. ”They have been told that they will not receive their degree certification even though many of them completed their courses in the last academic year. The newspaper said some of the affected students claimed they have been warned they could be deported by Friday, October 20. It said the Nigerian High Commission in London confirmed that 152 students had been caught up in the scandal, and that the sponsor agency had been left with a “draught of funding” ...

It also threatened to embark on an indefinite strike from October 28, 2017 if government failed to give a positive response. The Nigerian Senate had begun moves to scrap the post Unified Matriculation Examination, UME. The Senate yesterday mandated its committee on Tertiary Education to meet with relevant stakeholders, especially the Joint Admission and Matriculation Board (JAMB) and come up with recommendations on how to achieve the set goal. According to the Senate, the move has become imperative because the introduction of the post – UME examination has to a large extent failed to remedy the problems associated with the JAMB, adding that its continued existence has posed more challenges for the Nigeria educational system. The Senate has also called for the development of a strategy that would ensure the efficiency and integrity in the conduct of JAMB examination. Nigerian government has announced closure of 21 illegal universities and fake National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) camps across the country. This is made known yesterday by the Chairman of Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC), Professor Bolaji Owasanoye, during a one-day interactive seminar for religious leaders in Kebbi State. The ICPC boss, while speaking on the seminar’s theme: ‘Corruption is a sin against God and a crime against humanity, reject it’, noted that the commission had to adopt an holistic approach to combat corruption. N-Power has announced that its online assessment test will end on August 31. The information is contained in an update/reminder on the N-Power website. N-Power commenced online assessment on July 1. Three categories – Tax, Health and Agro – have attempted the test. Assessment test for N-Power Agro applicants ended August 1 while N-Teach assessment tests commenced on Wednesday, August 9. Teach volunteers are expected to improve basic education delivery in Nigeria and will be deployed as teacher assistants in primary schools nationwide. The programme explains that they will not replace the current teachers, but are to work as support teaching staff, assist with school management and other functions within the schools. The duration of the programme is 2 years and participants will undergo an initial induction training prior to deployment.
